Most sites offer email as a service, and with ISPConfig, setting up email for a domain is an easy process.

In this post we will setup email for the domain.

  1. Logon to your ISPConfig3 admin interface.
  2. Select the Email tab.
  3. Select the Add new Domain button.
  4. Select the Client from the dropdown.
  5. Enter in the Domain field.
  6. Select the Save button.

Once the email domain is created, we want to enable DKIM signing for this email domain as it will help get past spam filters.

  1. Select the Email tab.
  2. Select the email domain we created above.
  3. Select the DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) button.
  4. Select the enable DKIM checkbox.
  5. Select the Generate DKIM Private-Key.
  6. Select the Save button.

Hint: You can now go view your DNS records and you will see a new TXT entry containing the DKIM publick key.

DKIM works by signing the email with the DKIM provate key. The receiving email server will query DNS for the TXT record containing the DKIM public key. It will then use the public key to verify the server signature.

I have run into the same issue twice now while setting up DKIM signing. The issue is that one I enable dkim signing, amavis stops working. This is related to a permissions error. Please see ISPConfig3 — Aamavisd –Can’t open PEM file post.
